Lab grown diamonds are big in the jewellery world right now, with every indication that these standout stones will continue to grow in popularity over the next few years. But how many of us really understand this amazing gemstone?

Diamonds have always been shrouded in a little bit of mystery, and lab grown diamonds are no different. Many of us don’t understand the real difference between lab and natural diamonds, or what impact these gems have on the world around us.

But before we delve deeper into what impact diamonds have on our environment, what are lab grown diamonds? 

Basically, lab grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to their earth grown siblings, but rather than forming under pressure for millions of years, they’re actually formed over a few weeks in labs based across the world. There are two main methods of producing lab grown diamonds, CVD and HPHT, which have been refined over the past fifty years.

One of the biggest selling points for lab grown diamonds over earth grown diamonds is their smaller environmental impact. 

While businesses like Jessica Flinn only work with certifiably conflict-free diamonds, there is still the green element to consider. So if there is a conflict-free diamond that doesn’t contribute to the exploitation of land, and it's cheaper? It sounds ideal! What’s the catch? 

Lab grown diamonds may not have to be mined, but they do have to be grown. And a high-tech lab with hundreds of technicians and complicated machinery takes a lot of power. So where is that power coming from?

Like a jumped-up version of the plug socket in your living room, most factories are powered the same way: through the grid. Currently 78% of energy in the UK comes from fossil fuels, but some companies are determined to do better.

Earlier this year, we began a journey all across the world. Visiting Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, and India, all with the aim of finding out more about our existing suppliers, and gaining insight into any methods or suppliers we could use to improve our sustainable business practice.

We’ve been on the lookout for anything new, and at the Hong Kong International Gem and Trade Shows, we ran into an amazing company which has turned our lab grown diamond world upside down!

Skip forward in our journey to India, Surat, where we got an exclusive view of what is essentially the disneyland of eco lab grown diamonds. Our contact, Saichin, travelled all the way from Mumbai to show us around this diamond paradise. 

With an entire campus covered in greenery to house their production and administration buildings, this verdant utopia is the most high-tech site we have ever seen. Not just their labs, but this entire campus is powered with 90% solar energy, and 10% wind.
