AFTERCARE

CARING FOR YOUR JESSICA FLINN RING

So, you've received your Jessica Flinn ring and it's yours to keep forever! Now it's up to you to care for it, so it can be loved for generations to come.

Stronger gemstones such as Diamonds, Sapphires and Rubies are durable and can be worn and cared for with ease. Although, softer gemstones such as Morganite, Emerald and Aquamarine require a little more care. They can still be worn and enjoyed daily, just with a little extra TLC!

We often talk about the MOHs scale which is the Mineral Scale of Hardness, the harder (and tougher/more resilient) the gemstone, the higher the number. If you're not 100% sure where your gemstone lands on the MOHs scale then take a look through our gemstone guides.

AVOID LOTIONS AND POTIONS

From beauty products to cleaning products, harsh chemicals can tarnish or even damage your jewellery. We recommend removing your jewellery where possible when showering, cleaning or using chlorinated swimming pools.

REMOVE FOR STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES

Whether you're heading on a mountain bike ride, doing a spot of gardening or doing a weight workout, we advise you take off your ring so it doesn't get bashed, scratched or damaged.

TAKE IT OFF USING THE BAND

Removing your ring by holding the setting (the part around the gemstones) can cause damage over time. Instead, always hold the band when taking it on or off, paying extra attention and care if it is diamond set.

CHECK THE SETTING

As strong as our rings may be, we recommend that you regularly check the setting to ensure your gemstones are held securely in place. Any movement and it's time to get it fixed before they fall out!

STORE IN A PADDED RING BOX

When you're not wearing your ring, you should store it in a padded ring box, or in a jewellery box separate to your other jewellery. This will ensure that it is kept safe and can't damage or be damaged by any other jewellery items around it.

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE TERMS

When you purchase your ring, we recommend an insurer. If it is covered under your house insurer, be sure to read your terms. Some require you to have expensive jewellery assessed by a jeweller periodically.

How to Clean Your Ring

It's important to give your ring a bit of TLC every now and then, this includes giving it a good clean regularly. If you wear your engagement ring daily, we recommend cleaning it once every couple of weeks. Take a look at our step-by-step guide to learn how to properly and carefully clean your engagement ring.

  • Firstly, give your ring a once over and check for any scratches, dents or general damage. While you're inspecting your ring, make sure that all the claws are secure and holding in your gemstone(s) tightly. If you notice any loose gemstones or damage, contact your jeweller as soon as possible to solve the issue before further damage occurs. We offer a repair and refresh service, where we give your ring all the attention it needs!

  • Next, you'll need to make sure you have all the right equipment before you start cleaning your ring. This includes a small bowl or dish, a baby or soft bristled toothbrush, some washing up liquid and a clean cloth. Once you've got all your kit, fill the bowl with some warm (not boiling) water and add some washing up liquid. Now pop your ring in the bowl and leave it to soak for 20 minutes or so.

  • Once your ring has been soaking for 20 minutes, its time to grab your soft bristled toothbrush and give it a gentle brush, making sure to get into the cracks and crevices! Remember, don't scrub too hard as you could damage the metal or the gemstone.

  • After you've given your ring a gentle (but thorough) scrub, rinse it under warm running water. Make sure you're careful in this step and ensure your plug hole is covered, we don't want any rings down the drain! Alternatively, if it makes you a bit nervous to hold your ring over your sink you can fill a separate bowl with warm water and rinse it in there. Once your ring has been rinsed of all the washing up liquid and grime, use a soft cloth or towel to dry it off.

  • Now your ring is clean and back to its usual sparkly self, you can show it off in all its glory! If you feel as though your ring is in need of a professional clean, we offer a clean and polish service, where one of our trained jewellery experts can make your ring as sparkly as the day you received it.

We also always recommend that when you wear your rings together they are of the same metal. This is because wearing the same metal of the same strength helps to reduce the risk of your jewellery becoming worn and rubbing against each other which eventually causes damage.

You can always contact a member of our team if you need any advice.
