What are the most durable metals for everyday wear?

All of our precious metals have their own set of qualities making them a great option for daily wear - over the years gold alloys have been tried and tested to make sure they have the best properties possible. For our full guide on choosing the right metal, click here.

For white metals, we recommend opting for Platinum wherever possible - it's working properties make it the best metal to set stones into, and it won't wear away or fade over time.

For yellow or rose metals, each carat of gold has its own benefits, but if you can we recommend choosing 18ct gold. It has the highest gold content of 9ct, 14ct and 18ct, with 75% pure gold, plus other metals in the remaining 25%. It's easy to resize, has a stunning depth of colour, and is the most resistant to harsh chemicals and other substances we use day to day such as perfumes and hand creams.

What if I don't want a traditional diamond ring?

If traditional isn't for you, you're in the right place! We love to help our customers create rings that feel like them - whether that's an unconventional design, a traditional design with a unique gemstone, or something completely one of a kind. Engagement rings should bring you and your partner joy, and symbolise your style and your love - not impress the person at the hairdressers or look good 'on paper'.

Explore our unique Ready to Wear rings, customise one of our signature designs, or create a bespoke piece as special as your partner.

Do I need insurance for my engagement and wedding rings?

We highly recommend insuring your jewellery, especially if you plan on wearing it on holidays and all day, every day. You may be able to insure your jewellery through your home and contents insurer, but be sure to check the small print and all the terms and conditions!

Our recommendation is insuring your jewellery with a specialist insurer - you can get a quote from T H March here. They're specialists in watch and jewellery insurance, and have different levels of cover depending on your needs.

Can I return or exchange a ring if it doesn't fit?

Yes and no! If you purchase one of our Ready to Wear pieces with no resize and no engraving, you have 14 days to return or exchange the ring in pristine condition. For more details, you can read our full returns policy here. If you love the ring and just need it resizing, you have 3 months from delivery to claim your complimentary resize, or pay for a resize at any time.

If your ring is bespoke, custom, or made-to-order (really any purchases that aren't Ready to Wear), your item(s) aren't eligible for return or exchange. If your ring needs a resize, just get in touch and we'll talk you through the next steps to get it fitting perfectly! Return the ring to us within 3 months of delivery and your first resize will be free of charge.

Are online engagement/wedding rings safe to buy?

In our opinion, yes! We do everything we can to ensure you're confident with your purchase and have the knowledge you need to make an informed decision. We offer virtual appointments if you need some extra reassurance or to talk through your ideas, and you can call, email or Whatsapp our wonderful team if you have any questions or concerns.

We'll send over visual mockups, high resolution images of stones, previous design images, CAD renders, whatever you need to feel confident! We also have an appointment only showroom based in Sheffield if you do decide you'd like to see some of the designs or gemstones in person before purchasing.

Who can wear engagement rings?

Anyone that wants to! We're all about individuality and inclusivity, so if you want to tell the world you're engaged, do it!

Although many of our designs could be considered feminine leaning, we love creating unique pieces that really feel like you, no matter how you identify. Get in touch with your ideas and inspiration and celebrate your love with a special bespoke piece - societal norms are soooooo last century!

What happens if my ring gets damaged or scratched?

No problemo - we're well equipped to help get your jewellery back to its sparkling self!

We recommend getting your rings and other frequently worn jewellery professionally checked every 6-12 months, to make sure they're always in tip top shape, but sometimes things just happen! If your jewellery gets scratched or damaged, send it over to us and we'll get a full inspection from our expert bench jeweller. After a thorough inspection, we'll let you know the necessary repairs and their associated costs, and any optional repairs or recommendations to get your jewellery in top notch condition!

Getting your jewellery checked and professionally cleaned regularly can help prevent more extensive (and more expensive!) repairs being needed, so it's strongly recommended that if your jewellery is worn daily.

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

The '3 months wages' rule is SO last century. You should spend whatever feels comfortable - precious metals and gemstones aren't cheap, so the most important thing is that you're comfortable and confident, and not to feel pressured to spend a certain amount or impress others. It's not about them - it's about you and your partner, and having an engagement ring that will last, and brings a smile to your face when you look at it!

One thing to bear in mind is that compromising on band thickness, structure and claw type to save money initially may not save money in the long run. Thin bands, small claws, open settings and other features can mean more maintenance and repairs over the years, which could end up costing you more - if there's anything you're not sure about when it comes to recommendations for longevity and security, our design team will talk you through the details to make sure you feel comfortable and confident about your design choices and budget!

Which finger does an engagement ring go on?

In the UK, engagement rings are traditionally worn on the finger in between your little and middle fingers. In other countries and/or cultures, engagement rings and wedding rings are worn on the right hand, one on each, or even change hands before/after engagement! From a practical perspective, as the majority of the population are right handed, you're also less likely to catch or damage a ring worn on your non-dominant hand.

The origin of engagement and/or wedding rings being worn on this finger is said to be based on the ancient Roman belief that the 'vein of love' or vena amoris runs directly from this finger to the heart. We now know this isn't true, but isn't it a romantic thought? We love a mushy bit of folklore.

What's the difference between engagement and wedding rings?

Traditionally engagement rings are worn by one or both partners as a symbol of their love and commitment, and then if they choose to get married, a wedding ring is worn alongside the engagement ring on the same finger. In some countries engagement and wedding rings are worn on separate hands, and of course some couples choose to stay engaged and not get married, so just have the one ring!

Typically the style of engagement rings is a central gemstone, surrounded by smaller diamonds or gemstones or on it's own. This doesn't mean that rings that don't fit within this style aren't classed as engagement ring though! We love that engagement rings offer so much variety - they can be simple, modern, vintage, show-stopping, delicate, colourful, traditional, asymmetric, in different metals and with different, unique gemstones! Whatever your style, the important thing is that the ring is a symbol of your commitment to your partner - not what other people think an engagement ring 'should' be!

Wedding rings are typically a band style ring, and can be a straight band, set with diamonds or other gemstones, patterned or shaped! Traditionally they're made in precious metals like gold and platinum, but can also be made in silver, palladium, and other alternative metals like Titanium and Tungsten.

Do engagement rings have to have a diamond?

This one's easy - no!

Engagement rings don't have to have anything - as long as you love it, it doesn't matter what everyone else has or what an engagement ring 'should' look like! We LOVE diamonds, but we also LOVE sapphires, tourmalines, emeralds, garnets, and any precious or semi-precious that means something to you.

When it comes to jewellery (and other things), we're pro choice - choose your engagement ring, wedding ring and any other fine jewellery based on what you love! Whether you love traditional styles or something completely unique and one-of-a-kind, we'll guide and collaborate with you to bring your dream ring to life.

What are the most popular engagement ring styles?

Although we do see trends in engagement ring styles at Jessica Flinn, we're always creating rings in all different styles as our customers are all so unique! Engagement ring styles that never waiver are definitely trilogy rings and solitaire rings - they're classics for a reason! Another popular style (and our not-so-secret favourite) is most definitely the vintage/Art Deco look. Those geometric lines never fail to make us swoon, and in our completely un-biased opinion, our customers have fantastic taste.

Round gemstones are always at the top of the leaderboard, but over the last couple of years Emerald Cuts, Radiant Cuts and Oval Cuts have given Round Cuts a run for their money. We've also seen a resurgence in yellow gold, which we are 100% here for. Can't wait to see which shapes and styles are due for their time to shine over the next few years!

What's the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds?

Physically and visually - absolutely nothing! The only difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds are how they're formed; lab-grown (not to point out the obvious) are grown in a laboratory setting in a few weeks, and natural diamonds are formed in the earth over millions of years.

Both have inclusions that are graded on a scale, both can be certificated, and both can be colourless or colourful! They are both 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness and can be sourced in a huge array of shapes and sizes. If you're a fellow jewellery nerd, you can read our full Lab Grown Diamond Guide here.

So what actually is the difference you ask? Well to put it simply, the price. Natural diamonds are formed in the earth over millenia, and take a LOT of man power and expensive equipment to mine, sort, clean, cut and inspect for certification. The natural diamond supply is finite, and prices are also influenced by the huge companies that hold diamond stock. Lab-grown diamonds are grown in a much shorter time frame, and can basically be 'grown to order'!

What are alternative gemstones for engagement rings?

There are so many amazing options! Our personal favourites are Salt and Pepper Diamonds, Sapphires of all colours, Tourmalines and Colourful Lab Grown Diamonds! We also work with moissanite, garnet, amethyst, morganite, emerald, ruby, and many more. If you have a particular stone in mind, let us know and we'll advise on the pros and cons of using that particular gemstone for an engagement ring. We can also help customise the accents stone on our engagement rings if you want to spice things up!

As a general guideline, we recommend choosing a stone that is at least a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, as softer stones require much more care and consideration and aren't recommended for daily wear.

How do I find out their/my ring size?

There are a few different ways to do this! The easiest way would be to use a Ring Sizer, which you can find in UK sizes A-Z or A-Z+6 - both are available to purchase on our website, and here's our best practice guide. Unfortunately when you're planning a surprise, it might give the game away if you start asking your partner to try ring sizes 'just for fun'.

If you're planning a surprise proposal, here are a couple of options:

1. Recruit your partner's family and friends for help - this can be useful not just for ring sizes but for design input too! Just be sure to choose a friend or family member that can keep a secret! They might have already spoken to your partner about their ring size, or bought them a dress ring previously that you can use as a reference.

2. 'Borrow' a ring they wear regularly (preferably on a ring finger) and check the size - this will really help narrow it down. Use our Digital Ring Sizer tool to keep it on the DL.

3. This one isn't the most accurate method, but if you're really stuck and you have a friend/family member/colleague that you think has similar hands to your partner, grab a ring sizer and check their ring size! Bet you never thought you'd wish you'd looked at your partner's hands more, eh?

Something to remember: don't put too much pressure on yourself to get your partner's ring size right the first time! There are LOTS of variables that affect ring size, so we'll help you narrow it down as much as possible, but the most important thing is to enjoy the process and focus on design and gemstone choice - the ring can always be resized if it's not perfect the first time around! Your first resize is free of charge on all Jessica Flinn precious metal rings within 3 months of delivery, and most ring designs can be sized up or down by 3-4 sizes.

Can engagement rings be customised or bespoke?

Yes, yes, yes! This is where we shine! (pun intended)

Any of our designs can be customised, whether this is metal colour or carat, gemstone type or shape, wed-fit or low profile. If you see a design you love but want to tweak a thing or two, get in touch with our wonderful design team and we'll guide you through the process of creating your very own Custom Engagement Ring! Browse our collections, or explore our Inspiration gallery to find a design that feels just right.

If you're after something completely one-of-a-kind, or want to take elements of different styles and combine them into something magical, a bespoke engagement ring is perfect for you! Our team will work with you to bring your vision to life - your designer will take your ideas and collaborate with our in house CAD designer to ensure your dream ring is not only beautiful but also secure and suitable for daily wear.

What does carat, cut, clarity and colour mean?

Ahh, the 4C's. Carat, cut, clarity and colour are all properties of diamonds that are used to independently grade each stone - it's basically a diamond's school report card! All of these factors are taken into account in the price of a diamond. Here's a short summary of each characteristic:

Carat - this refers to the weight of the diamond, for example 0.50ct is half a carat, which is equivalent to 0.1g, and 1.00ct is 0.2g. We really encourage you not to get too caught up on carat weight, especially in Salt and Pepper Diamonds! Different cuts hold carat weight differently, so we often talk about our stones by their dimensions rather than carat weight.

Cut - in round diamonds, this refers to the quality of the cut, which is graded from poor to excellent. The quality and proportions of the diamond cut help ensure the diamond interacts with light in the best way possible, aka making it mega sparkly! Cut can also refer to the shape of a diamond or gemstone, for example 'Pear Cut', 'Marquise Cut' or 'Oval Cut'. There are also different types of gemstone cuts that are a broader style, such as 'Rose Cut' which is often found in Salt and Pepper Diamonds and faceted by hand, 'Brilliant Cut' and 'Step Cut' which is a particular facet style. If you want to nerd out with us about all things 4C's, get in touch with any questions!

Clarity - in traditional, colourless diamonds, clarity refers to the type and amount of inclusions that are found in a diamond. Clarity ranges from Flawless to Included, and to the naked eye, the difference between some clarity gradings is indistinguishable. Brilliant cuts hide inclusions incredibly well, and VS (very slight inclusions) clarity usually means any inclusions aren't visible to the naked eye. In stones smaller than 0.50ct, SI or slightly included diamonds are also unlikely to have inclusions visible to the naked eye! We recommend opting for a higher clarity on step cut stones such as Emerald Cut diamonds, as inclusions can be more visible in their window like facets. We personally love inclusions, as they give diamonds a bit more personality! Salt & Pepper diamonds in particular would be the lowest on a grading scale, but have beautiful, one of a kind inclusions that we love!

Colour - this might seem like a strange property for 'colourless' diamonds, but what it really means is how much or little yellow colouring there is in the diamond! The colour scale ranges from D to Z, with D being completely colourless, and Z being 'fancy' coloured, including vivid yellows, pinks, greens, blues. Colour grades from D to G are indistinguishable to the naked eye, especially in smaller stones! K-L gradings can make for a stunning pale yellow to champagne coloured stone, so it's really important to see the actual stone and not just rely on the report - if the diamond gives you the feels, that's the one!

Wedding ring faqs

Do both partners need wedding rings?

That's completely up to you! Engagement and wedding rings are so personal, and it's important to stick to what feels right to you. Some couples both wear engagement and wedding rings, some just wedding rings, and it's totally okay if one partner doesn't want to wear a ring! Others just wear their rings on special occasions, or have different rings depending on how they feel. It really is down to what suits you and your partner best.

Do wedding rings have to match?

Not if you don't want them to! It's a really personal choice, and some couples love to have matching wedding rings, or a matching element, but others want their wedding ring to reflect their personality so choose different styles or metals! A nice way to have a matching element to your wedding rings is to have the same engraving as one another - a symbol that is your own little secret on the inside of your wedding bands.

Which hand and finger does a wedding ring go on?

In the UK, the majority of people wear their wedding rings on their left hand, on their fourth finger (between your little and middle fingers). Other cultures and/or countries wear wedding bands on the same finger on their right hand, and others wear an engagement ring on one hand and their wedding ring on the other!

What metals are best for wedding rings?

For precious metal rings, it's always recommended to choose the highest carat for yellow and rose gold where possible, and we recommend opting for Platinum for white metals.

Pure gold is incredibly resistant to chemicals and other lotions and potions that your ring will come in contact with over years of wear, and the higher the carat of gold, the more pure gold content there is in the alloy! Gold does wear away over time, so it's really important to get your jewellery checked regularly (at least annually), especially if it's diamond set and worn every day. White golds are often plated with rhodium, to give them their mirror shine bright white colour - this wears over time and will need to be re-applied, on average every 6-24 months.

Platinum is a great metal for wedding and engagement rings, as it doesn't wear in the same way as gold over time, and is also naturally white, so doesn't need to be plated with rhodium to retain it's colour. Platinum also holds gemstones and diamonds in place very well - there's a reason it's a fan favourite!

We're also fans of alternative metals for wedding rings, thanks to our sibling brand Flinn & Steel. Metals such as Tantalum, Titanium, Stainless Steel, Black Zirconium and loads more - each have their own pros and cons, so check out their metal guides if you're interested in alternative metal wedding bands!

Can I wear my engagement ring and wedding ring together?

Yes! Traditionally in the UK engagement and wedding rings are worn on the same finger at the same time, but some people might only wear their engagement ring on special occasions and their wedding ring daily, and others wear both together regularly or daily!

It's recommended that if you do wear your rings together that they're the same metal and metal carat, as a difference in metals can cause more wear to your rings. We love a good ol' ring stack, so you'll find wedding rings of all widths, profiles and shapes to find the perfect fit for you that can be worn alongside your engagement ring in all it's glory!

Should wedding rings and engagement rings match?

Not necessarily! It's a really personal choice, and some people prefer a matching or similar style for their rings, while others like something a little bit different that still lets both rings have their moment in the spotlight!

We have a range of Bridal sets with fully matching engagement and wedding rings, and others that are slightly different but complement each other really well! We also specialise in custom and bespoke rings, so if you can't see exactly what you're looking for, get in touch with your ideas and we'll bring them to life.

How long does it take to get a wedding ring made?

All of our wedding rings are made to order just for you, and usually take around 6-8 weeks to make. Every ring is cast, set, hallmarked and polished before a final inspection and then dispatched in a fully insured parcel to you! Shaped to fit or more complex designs and stone shapes can take slightly longer, so if you have a deadline it's always best to get in touch to make sure current time scales suit your timeframe. For shaped to fit, custom and bespoke wedding rings, the design process usually takes a few weeks, so be sure to leave enough time before your wedding to get your ring designed and ordered - we recommend looking at wedding rings around 6 months before your wedding date!

What if my ring size changes after the wedding?

No problem! All precious metal Jessica Flinn wedding rings are eligible for one resize (within 3 sizes up or down) free of charge, so if you ring size needs a tweak after the wedding, simply pop your ring back to us and let us know the size you'd like your ring to be adjusted to! If you've already used your free resize, we can still adjust your ring to another size and will provide a quote based on the metal and how many sizes you need your ring resizing.

How much do wedding rings cost on average?

It really does depend on the style, diamond or gemstone type and metal you choose! Alternative metal wedding rings from our sibling brand Flinn & Steel start from upwards of £100, and our Jessica Flinn made to order wedding rings collection starts from around £1000 in 9ct gold. We also offer 14ct and 18ct recycled golds, Platinum, and Palladium by request!

Can wedding rings be engraved?

Absolutely! We offer an engraving service for all eligible wedding rings, which can include text or small images/emojis. For slim bands we recommend no more than 18 characters, to ensure your engraving is as legible as possible on it's small surface area! If your ideal engraving is over the character limit, get in touch with your engraving ideas and the ring style and size you're interested in, and we'll confirm if your engraving is possible. On wider bands and larger ring sizes, we may be able to offer up to 30 characters for your engraving!

Our in house technician applies your engravings using a laser engraver, however if you're interested in hand engraving we can offer this by request! Get in touch to confirm what you're after and we'll provide a quote.
