What is morganite?

Morganite is a stunning gemstone belonging to the beryl family, renowned for its delicate hues ranging from pale pink to peach. Named after the renowned financier J.P. Morgan, who had a keen interest in gemstones, morganite captivates with its subtle yet enchanting colours, reminiscent of sunset skies and blush blossoms. This gemstone's allure lies in its transparency and clarity, allowing light to pass through and create a soft, ethereal glow. You might be wondering whether morganite is good for an engagement ring, and the answer is yes, morganite is a great choice for an engagement ring! It's romantic pink tones and high score on the Moh's scale means that it's both meaningful and great for everyday wear.

morganite value

The value of morganite is influenced by several factors including its colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight. Typically, stones with a vibrant, saturated pink colour will be priced higher, especially those with minimal inclusions and better clarity. Generally, morganite is considered more affordable compared to other gemstones like diamonds or emeralds, but its price can still range from relatively inexpensive to more expensive, especially for larger, high-quality stones with vivid colours and excellent clarity. As with any gemstone, the price also depends on the current market and demand levels. Morganites popularity continues to grow, so we can only assume that its value will also continue to increase!

morganite hardness

Morganite has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable gemstone suitable for everyday wear in jewellery. This level of hardness indicates that morganite is less prone to scratching or abrasions compared to softer gemstones such as opal and pearl, but it should still be handled with care to prevent damage!

morganite rarity

Morganite is considered a relatively rare gemstone and is particularly rare in larger sizes and clear, vivid colours. As a result, larger, more vividly coloured morganite stones with excellent clarity are priced higher due to their scarcity in the gemstone market.

Lab grown morganite

Lab grown morganite offers a fascinating alternative to its natural counterpart, it has the same captivating pink and peachy colours but comes with the added benefit of being ethically created and more affordable. Lab morganite is made by scientists who recreate the exact conditions that morganite naturally occurs in, meaning these synthetic gemstones have the exact same chemical composition and visual beauty as natural ones.

Lab grown morganites also come with the added reassurance for customers that their gemstone has been created in a more environmentally and ethically friendly environment.

Where do morganites come from?

Morganite is found all over the world, with some of the more popular mining sites in countries such as Russia, Mozambique, Namibia, Brazil and Madagascar. Morganite is occasionally found in other regions where beryl minerals are present, though these occurrences are less common.

Morganite was discovered in 1911 in Madagascar by prolific gemologist, George Frederick Kunz. Frederick Kunz named the stone after J.P. Morgan who was a fellow gemstone enthusiast!

Caring for your morganite

Caring for morganite gemstones is relatively straightforward to ensure their long-lasting beauty. To maintain their brilliance and sparkle, it's advisable to clean your morganite jewellery regularly using mild soap and warm water, gently scrubbing with a baby toothbrush brush or soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals as they can damage the stone.

Morganite has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, making it durable but still susceptible to scratches from harder materials, so its important to store morganite jewellery separately from other pieces to prevent scratching. And remember to always remove your jewellery when engaging in activities that may expose it to harsh conditions or chemicals such as swimming, visiting the gym or cleaning.

Due to the fact that morganite should not be exposed to heat, you should avoid cleaning it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Instead, clean your morganite jewellery with warm, soapy water (no harsh chemicals!) and a soft brush or cloth.
