Jewellery Travel Tips
Our lovely team recently travelled across Asia, stopping in Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, and India for a whole lot of discovery! Of course, the Jessica Flinn team is a glam bunch, so you know there was a lot of sparkle travelling across the continent.
If you're planning a journey of your own, you need to know what to do with your jewellery as you go on your adventure! Luckily for you, we have every tip and trick for you right here. Read on!
Wear it
Depending on how much jewellery you’re taking on your trip (some of us like a jewellery outfit of the day) there are a few things you can do to keep your precious items safe!
One option (and surprisingly often the safest) is to simply wear your jewellery while you travel. Just make sure if you're planning to let the bling out on the plane, it is easily removable when you go through the scanner, or that can delay your journey.
Carry it With You
Whatever you keep your jewellery in, don’t put it in any luggage you can't keep an eye on!
We have all heard the horror stories where you get off the plane in Miami and your suitcase has ended up in the canary islands. Pop your jewellery in your carry on luggage, so you know it’ll be with you wherever you end up!
Get Crafty
Some of the most inventive solutions to keeping your jewellery safe as you make your way across the world involve things that you might find at the back of a kitchen cupboard or under the sofa!
More cost effective than a jewellery box, using buttons to keep your earring sets together and a drinking straw to keep your necklace from tangling might not be glamorous, but it does work!
Keep it Safe in the Safe
Our fabulous senior designer Emma recently returned from her own holiday on sun and sea, and as a jewellery pro, you know she’s careful about her rings!
“I wouldn't recommend taking too many high value pieces abroad. If they have a hidden safe at the hotel then keep your jewels in there, but for everyday pieces like engagement & wedding rings then I'd say the safest place is always on your hand. I put mine in the hotel safe when I went to sit by the pool, but when walking around and going out for food I kept it on. Basically it's either on you or in the safe!”
- Emma, Senior Designer
Get Insured!
Most people take out holiday insurance, but you need to be aware of what that covers. If your holiday insurance only covers things like your flights, make sure you have separate jewellery insurance that covers loss and damage outside of the country as well as in the UK.
Our recommended insurers will be able to help out with any new queries, or your current provider will be able to clarify any issues with your existing cover.
Is it Worth the Risk?
Even if you’re insured, it isn't always worth the risk.
Some things are irreplaceable, and sometimes it's best to just leave them at home. If you have an heirloom piece of jewellery of great sentimental value, think how devastated you would be if it went missing. It doesn't have to be worth money to be worth keeping safe!
