Toi et Moi Rings: The Romantic Meaning Behind the french-inspired design

What is a Toi et Moi ring?

Toi et Moi rings are certainly having their moment right now! Translating to ‘you and me’ in French, this romantic design uses a pair of gemstones (usually birthstones) to symbolise two lovers joining together in perfect harmony. What could be more sentimental?

These meaningful designs usually consist of two different gemstones coming together as one in the centre, however each individual stone still shines just as brightly in its own right, creating a satisfying sense of balance and equality.

Where did Toi et Moi rings come from?

Although popularised in recent years by a number of celebrity engagements, this seemingly modern and unusual design is actually a centuries-old engagement ring style from 1796, when Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Josephine de Beauharnais with a pear cut diamond and sapphire… the very first Toi et Moi design!

Toi et Moi rings were then popular choices throughout the Edwardian era, where they often consisted of two round old cut diamonds usually on a twisted band, rather than the mixed gemstones and cuts that we see more frequently today.

High Profile Designs

Toi et Moi rings have certainly grown in popularity over the past couple of years, thanks to celebrities such as Megan Fox and Ariana Grande, who were presented with unique variations of the design by their significant others. Take a look below - whose is your favourite?

Megan Fox - Machine Gun Kelly chose to incorporate his and Megan’s birthstones for her engagement ring; two pear cut gemstones, an emerald and a diamond. This spectacular ring is made from two separate bands that interlock using magnets.

Ariana Grande - After getting engaged to her now-husband Dalton Gomez, eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out that the pearl sitting next to her dazzling oval cut diamond on her toi et moi engagement ring may be the one she inherited on her grandfather’s pearl tie pin. This unique ring uses two different sized stones & shapes.

Emily Ratajkowski  - Emily designed her engagement ring together with her partner at the time, Sebastian Bear-McClard. She opted for a 3ct pear cut diamond and a 2ct princess cut diamond, set on an 18ct yellow gold band. Paired with her chunky yellow gold wedding ring, this is a stack to make an impact!

Jackie Kennedy - The former first lady famously redesigned her Van Cleef & Arpels Toi et Moi engagement ring, a decade after it was presented to her by President John F. Kennedy. Set with an impressive emerald and diamond weighing almost 3ct each, she switched the Art Deco-style baguettes on its twisted band for even bigger marquise diamonds. ICONIC.

Toi et Moi rings have absolutely got our seal of approval. They rebel against the usual ‘rules’ of symmetrical design, and are so meaningful to the wearer. Whether the gemstones represent a relationship between two partners, a parent and child, two friends, or even just a ‘because I love it!’ ring, this is a style we think will stick around for years to come.
