2023 ENGAGEMENT RING TRENDS

Well 2022, that was a year wasn’t it? Machine Gun Kelly proposed with a Toi Et Moi ring, lab grown diamonds became grown up, and more affordable gemstones were added to the menu.

What does 2023 have in store for engagement rings? And what can you expect to see in our future collections? We put this question to our team, and this is what they said…

NUMBER 1

MARQUISE DIAMONDS

Large marquise white diamond centre stones are set to be one of the biggest engagement ring trends in 2023. Pointing north to south, we recommend a diamond above 1ct to elongate your fingers and make a true statement.

If an ethical centrestone is important to you, we can help you source beautiful lab grown diamonds from one of our trusted suppliers. Pair this with a patterned or diamond set band to really make them dance.

NUMBER 2

GEOMETRIC TEALS

2023 will be the year of the geometric teal sapphire. Whether it’s a kite, a shield, or a perfectly cut princess cut set on its side, you can expect to see them in less traditional designs throughout the year ahead.

Combining hues of blue, green and yellow, teal sapphires are universal and suit every skin tone. With geometric cuts featuring long and dramatic facets, you can glimpse deep into the stone to experience all of its unique colours. Make it ethical by choosing teals from Montana or Australian mines.

NUMBER 3

TOI ET MOI

2023 will be the year of the geometric teal sapphire. Whether it’s a kite, a shield, or a perfectly cut princess cut set on its side, you can expect to see them in less traditional designs throughout the year ahead.

Combining hues of blue, green and yellow, teal sapphires are universal and suit every skin tone. With geometric cuts featuring long and dramatic facets, you can glimpse deep into the stone to experience all of its unique colours. Make it ethical by choosing teals from Montana or Australian mines.

NUMBER 4

GREEN + GOLD

Bold green gemstones set in bright yellow gold are a match made in heaven. From the intense apple shades of optix cut tourmalines, to traditional green sapphires, we anticipate more classic, vintage-inspired combinations in many of our bespoke designs next year.

We also see bezel settings in our future, plus trilogy rings, and a sprinkling of white diamonds. This timeless combination will never look out of date.

NUMBER 5

BEAUTIFUL BEZELS

Unlike claws, or prongs, which hold a gemstone in place at key touch points or corners, a bezel setting overlaps the stone and encircles it, either partially or completely.

Whilst this setting is recommended for people who are particularly clumsy, or for softer gemstones, it’s a really beautiful way to hold a gemstone in place. If you’re searching for a vintage or Art Deco inspired design, this setting style could well be for you.

NUMBER 6

DRAMATIC TRILOGY RINGS

Trilogy rings will always be popular, but in 2023 we expect them to be extra special. Larger centre stones will be on the menu, and you can expect drama from all the usual suspects; oval, marquise and emerald cuts.

Budget will be a key barrier for many budding proposers, so you’re likely to see lots more larger and affordable centre stones such as tourmaline, aquamarine, alexandrite and spinel.

NUMBER 7

ALEXANDRITE, WHO?

Say hello to the new gemstone on the block. Already popular in America, Alexandrites are set to make their way over the Atlantic and on to British shores in 2023.

But what exactly is it? This unique semi-precious gemstone changes colours under different lights. From greens, to purples and reds, an Alexandrite ring will put on a different show every time you wear it. And at 8.5 on the MOHS scale of hardness, it meets all of our standards for everyday wear.

NUMBER 8

baguettes, all over

Baguette cut diamonds and gemstones are similar to emerald cuts, in that they use a step cutting technique. However, whilst emerald cuts have 57 facets, baguette cuts have just 14.

Up until recently these unique, long and slim gemstones were reserved for Art Deco and vintage inspired side stones. We predict that, in 2023, they will have their time to shine as centre stones. And we’re here for it.

NUMBER 9

COLOURFUL SIDE STONES

Another key trend we expect to see in 2023 is colourful side stones. Gone are the days of giving the centre stone all of the attention, it’s time for dazzling diamond back up dancers to shine.

Choose from deep blue and green sapphires, make it subtle with cinnamon and champagne diamonds, or make it dark and stormy with a dash of salt and pepper. Your design, your rules.

NUMBER 10

MORE SALT & PEPPER

This is no new trend - well not for us, anyway. Salt and pepper diamonds have long been a staple of our ready to wear collection, and we see no sign of requests for them slowing down.

As more people accept and embrace imperfect diamonds, we anticipate lots more requests for salt and pepper diamonds in even more shades, including paler stones, and even more unusual ‘goldfish’ salt and pepper diamonds with hints of luscious orange.

If you’re planning to pop the question in 2023 and you need a little help, our showroom and design team would love to hear from you. Email us at ruby@jessicaflinn.co.uk, or book a virtual or in person appointment.
