LET'S TALK BIRTHSTONES

Calling all January babies...

Let’s warm up the icy mornings of January with deep burning red-cognac colours.

Garnets are the traditional gemstone linked with this month with a 7.5 on the Mohs scale! We like Garnets as they are strong enough to withstand daily wear with some extra care here and there… think of it like a ring M.O.T!

Celebrating a birthday in February...

Let us amaze you with Amethysts.

This gorgeous gemstone is deep purple in colour with a 7 on the Mohs scale. This gem would need to be worn with care but can be worn daily.

The February birthstone is said to strengthen relationships and give its wearer courage.

Ancient Greeks thought that the amethyst guarded against intoxication. In fact, “amethyst” comes from amethystos, a Greek word meaning “sober.”

Marching into March...

Fancying a little pocket of the ocean to evoke those summer holiday memories?

Aquamarine is the birthstone for March with it’s watery light blue hues.

Quick fact: The name ‘Aquamarine’ is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea which is displayed in its namesake with this serenely coloured gemstone.

This gem is part of the same family as Emerald and Morganite so would adhere to the same care advice, with a 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale.

Hello April...

🎵 Diamonds are a girl’s best friend  🎵

These gemstones don’t have to be your traditional white diamonds, with an array of shades and hues the possibilities are endless!

They’re the strongest natural mineral on earth with a 10 on the Mohs scale, and can be worn daily.

It's gonna be May 🎵

Emerald, derived from the word “smaragdus,” means, quite literally, “green” in Greek.

This birthstone has a vivid green colour with a wealth of inclusions adding personality and that added little bit of drama.

With a 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale, we advise that you follow the same guidelines of care shown on our Emerald blog post.

Jump into June...

We’d like to introduce you to June’s sassier, stronger sister… Alexandrite.

With a 8.5 on the Mohs scale this harder gemstone beats the traditional birthstone for June which is Pearl. Pearl’s are extremely soft with a 2.5 on the Mohs scale.

Here at Jessica Flinn we create forever rings that last a lifetime so Alexandrite is our leading lady.

Let's enjoy the warmth in July...

With a deep red-pink colour introducing... Ruby. Sister to Sapphires, these gorgeous gemstones have a 9 on the Mohs scale so can be worn daily.

This traditional birthstone is said by myths and legends to signify wisdom, health and love, what more could you want?

According to August...

We're breaking traditions and have chosen Spinel as our alternative birthstone.

Peridot is commonly August’s birthstone but with a 6.5 on the Mohs scale we want a gemstone that is harder and can be designed to last a lifetime.

Spinels have a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale and can be worn with care daily.  Feeling regal? Royalty use Spinel's in their crowns making this gemstone definitely fit for a queen!

You’ll be spoilt for choice with the array of rainbow coloured Spinels to compliment the sunny nights of August.

Stepping into September...

Introducing Ruby’s colourful sister, Sapphire.

With a 9 on the Mohs scale this gemstone can be worn daily and still retain its beauty year after year.

Brighten up the rainy days with magnificent arrays of colours and hues that Sapphires have to offer.

Quick fact to impress your friends… For countless centuries, Sapphires have adorned royalty. The elite of ancient Greece and Rome believed that blue sapphires protected their owners from harm and envy!

Let's get spooky in October...

October traditionally picks opal as its birthstone, but we wanted to shake things up a bit and have chosen Tourmalines.

Tourmalines are 7.5 on the Mohs scale compared to Opal’s softer 5.5, making our chosen gemstone a clear winner for forever rings!

This birthstone is available in a variety of colours, including pleochroic such as, watermelon tourmalines. Check out our Tourmalines blog post for facts about these colour bursting gemstones.

Embrace the darker nights of November with...

Say hi, to this month’s birthstone… Topaz.

This birthstone offers an abundance of colours with Blue Topaz and Imperial Topaz being the people’s favourites.

This gemstone is an 8 on the Mohs scale so can be worn daily with a little bit of love and care, to prolong their beauty.

Snuggle up by the fire in December with...

We love alternatives here, so we have decided to mix things up and introduce Tanzanite as the December birthstone.

With a grading of 6.5 on the Mohs scale this gemstone needs to be worn with care. It’s a great substitute for the much softer traditional birthstone of Turquoise.

Spiritually Tanzanite is said to be a good stone to wear or have near in situations where you need a calming and soothing presence.
